Summary

The Institution of Engineers (India), Coimbatore Local Centre, in association with the Department of Chemical Engineering, KPR Institute of Engineering and Technology (KPRIET), Coimbatore, organized a Hands-on Training Session on “Innovative Approaches to Indoor Saffron Cultivation” on 24th September 2025 (Wednesday) at Veena Hall, KPRIET.

The program commenced with a welcome address and presidential remarks by Dr. J. Krishnamoorthi, Chairman, IEI Coimbatore Local Centre, followed by a felicitation address by Dr. S. Balasubramanian, Professor and Head, Department of Chemical Engineering, KPRIET. Lt. Dr. A.K. Priya, Professor, Department of Chemical Engineering and Committee Member of IEI Coimbatore Local Centre, introduced the guest trainer, Ms. Refana Shahul, Founder and Director, Mycoblooms Mushroomery Private Limited, Coimbatore.

The session provided participants with practical exposure to the techniques involved in indoor saffron cultivation. Ms. Refana demonstrated the step-by-step procedure for bulb selection, substrate preparation, temperature and humidity control, and growth monitoring in controlled environments. Participants actively engaged in hands-on activities, gaining insight into the setup and maintenance of small-scale saffron cultivation systems.

The training also included discussions on the economic feasibility, technological requirements, and entrepreneurial potential of indoor saffron farming. Students and faculty members interacted enthusiastically, clarifying their doubts and exploring possibilities for research and commercial implementation.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. G. Madhan Mohan, Honorary Secretary, IEI Coimbatore Local Centre. The session proved highly informative and practical, equipping participants with the knowledge and confidence to explore innovative approaches to sustainable, high-value crop cultivation.
