The one credit course on 'U21OEE03 - ENERGY EFFICIENCY IN ELECTRICAL UTILITIES' (SESSION - 2) had the following outcomes:

Students gained knowledge on the role of electrical utilities in industrial operations and the scope of electrical energy savings leading to decarbonization.

Students understood the scientific operating principles and assessment of the performance of electrical equipment and associated systems.

Summary

The department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering organized a one credit course on 'U21OEE03 - ENERGY EFFICIENCY IN ELECTRICAL UTILITIES' (SESSION - 2) on 18/11/2023(Saturday) from 09.00 AM to 04.00 PM exclusively for the second year students of EEE. A heart-warming welcome was delivered by Dr. V. S. Chandrika, Professor, Dept. of EEE. Dr. S. Thangapandiyan, Production Manager, Enbest Pumps India Private Limited, Coimbatore delivered a valuable lecture on the topic of ENERGY EFFICIENCY IN ELECTRICAL UTILITIES. He covered the following topics during forenoon and afternoon sessions.

Forenoon:

ENERGY EFFICIENCY IN ELECTRIC MOTORS: Introduction, Motor types, Motor characteristics, Motor efficiency, Motor selection, Energy efficient motors, Factors effecting energy efficiency and minimizing motor losses in operation, Rewinding effects on energy efficiency, speed control of motors, Star labelling of energy efficient induction motors.

Afternoon:

ENERGY MANAGEMENT AND AUDIT: Definition and objectives of energy management, Energy audit – types and methodology, Need for energy audit, Energy auditing methodology, Understanding energy costs, Benchmarking, Energy performance, Maximizing system efficiency, Instruments and metering for Energy Audit.

PERFORMING FINANCIAL ANALYSIS

Introduction, fixed and variable costs, Interest charges, simple pay-back period, discounted cash flow methods- Net Present Value method and Internal rate of return method; Factors affecting analysis.

The speaker covered everything that the electrical engineering students and practicing engineers need to know about energy efficiency in electrical utilities. He also cleared all the queries of the participants in a detailed way. The participants gave a very good feedback on the presentation of the speaker. The vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. I. Baranilingesan, Assistant Professor (Sl.G.) / EEE.There were 71 second year students who attended the course and got benefited. The department of EEE thanks the management for providing this opportunity to conduct the one credit course successfully.
