General Engineering

Building strong engineering fundamentals through a learn-by-doing philosophy, blending faculty from EEE, Mech, ECE, CSE and allied streams to nurture interdisciplinary, industry-ready engineers.

General Engineering
About the department

The Department of General Engineering at KPR Institute of Engineering and Technology is dedicated to building strong engineering fundamentals in students right from the first year. The department follows a "learn by doing" philosophy — every core concept taught in the classroom is reinforced through hands-on practice, where students build, test and troubleshoot working models and small projects on their own. This approach transforms first-year learners from passive listeners into confident makers who understand engineering principles by experiencing them.

The department is a unique blend of dynamic faculty members drawn from various engineering disciplines — Electrical and Electronics, Mechanical, Electronics and Communication, Computer Science and allied streams — bringing multidisciplinary expertise, industrial exposure and research experience into first-year classrooms and laboratories. This diversity enables students to see engineering as an integrated whole rather than isolated subjects, and encourages interdisciplinary thinking from day one.

At the heart of the department is the Makerspace — a Centre of Excellence with dedicated zones for electrical practices, electronics and embedded systems, and fabrication — where students design, prototype and demonstrate their own mini projects. Through concept-based experiments, tinkering activities and guided small projects, the department nurtures creativity, problem-solving ability, teamwork and the core engineering skills that form the foundation for every branch of engineering, preparing students to excel in their higher semesters and emerge as industry-ready, innovation-driven engineers.

Vision

To develop innovative, skilled and socially responsible engineers through experiential learning, interdisciplinary exposure and practical engineering education.

Mission
  • Provide hands-on engineering experiences that complement classroom learning.
  • Develop innovation, creativity and problem-solving skills among first-year students.
  • Create opportunities for interdisciplinary engineering exploration.
  • Promote industry awareness, professional development and lifelong learning.
  • Establish a strong maker and innovation culture within the institution.

Makerspace

The Makerspace at KPRIET is a common, interdisciplinary fabrication and prototyping facility open to students across all engineering disciplines from their very first year. It brings fabrication, electronics, IoT, AI, robotics and automation under one roof, turning ideas sketched on paper into working prototypes — and prototypes into projects, hackathon entries, patents and startups.

Why Makerspace at KPRIET?

01 Transforms students from engineering learners into engineering creators
02 Bridges the gap between theory, hands-on skills and innovation
03 Provides hands-on exposure right from the first year
04 Develops future-ready engineers for Industry 4.0 and 5.0
Unique Features

Common facility

One shared makerspace for all engineering disciplines, not siloed by department.

First-year access

Interdisciplinary prototype development starts from year one, not final year.

Integrated technologies

Fabrication, electronics, IoT, AI, robotics and automation under one roof.

End-to-end ecosystem

Design thinking → making → prototyping → innovation, in one continuous flow.

Beyond the classroom

Supports student projects, hackathons, startups, patents and product development.
