The Department of Civil Engineering, KPR Institute of Engineering and Technology, organized an Expert Talk on "Construction Management as a Career: Opportunities and Growth Pathways" on 23 July 2026 at Thanam Hall. The session was delivered by Er. S. G. Ashok Kumar, Founder, CEO & Director, Construction Management Training Institute (CMTI), Bengaluru.
The expert session aimed to bridge the gap between academic learning and industry expectations by exposing students to the emerging opportunities in the field of construction management. The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from Civil Engineering students and faculty members.
During his address, Er. S. G. Ashok Kumar shared valuable insights into the evolving construction industry and highlighted the growing demand for skilled civil engineers with expertise in planning, project management, contracts, quality control, quantity surveying, estimation, and modern construction technologies. He emphasized that technical knowledge must be complemented with professional skills, continuous learning, and practical exposure to build a successful career.
He explained the various career pathways available for Civil Engineering graduates, including opportunities in Construction Management, Project Planning and Scheduling, Quantity Surveying, Billing Engineering, Contracts Management, Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC), Building Information Modelling (BIM), Project Controls, and Infrastructure Development. He also discussed the importance of developing proficiency in industry-standard software such as Primavera P6, AutoCAD, Revit, and BIM tools to enhance employability.
The speaker encouraged students to actively pursue internships, industrial training, professional certifications, and continuous skill development to remain competitive in the rapidly evolving construction sector. He also highlighted the importance of communication skills, leadership, teamwork, problem-solving ability, and professional ethics as essential qualities for career growth.
An interactive question-and-answer session followed, during which students enthusiastically clarified their queries regarding higher studies, career opportunities, industry expectations, placement preparation, salary prospects, and professional development. The speaker responded with practical guidance drawn from his extensive industry experience, making the session highly engaging and informative.
