An informative session titled “Cyber Law for Engineers” was conducted to create awareness among engineering students about the legal aspects associated with technology, innovation, and intellectual property. The session focused on the importance of protecting original ideas, creative works, brands, geographical products, and industrial designs through appropriate legal mechanisms.
The session covered the following major areas:
The participants were introduced to the concept of patents and their role in protecting new and innovative inventions. The discussion highlighted the importance of novelty, innovation, and usefulness in obtaining patent protection. The session also explained how patents can help inventors prevent unauthorized use of their inventions.
The concept of copyright and its relevance to engineers and technology professionals was discussed. Copyright provides protection for original creative works such as software, technical documents, drawings, photographs, and other forms of original expression. The participants learned about the importance of respecting copyright while using or developing digital content.
The session explained trademarks as a means of protecting distinctive names, logos, symbols, and other identifiers associated with goods or services. The discussion helped participants understand how trademarks contribute to brand identity and prevent confusion between different businesses or products.
The participants were introduced to Geographical Indications (GI) and their connection with products originating from a particular geographical region. The discussion explained how GI protection helps identify products whose qualities, reputation, or characteristics are associated with their place of origin.
The importance of design registration was also discussed. Participants learned that registration can provide legal protection for the visual or aesthetic features of a product. The topic highlighted the significance of protecting original product designs from unauthorized copying.
